بل تذهب الرواية إلى أبعدَ من ذلك، في تحليلها الفنِّيِّ لمشكلات العصر الخطيرة، إذ اختار جيل مي الحداثة، لكنَّه رفض دفع ثمنها، لطفيّ السيِّد، طه حسين، الرافعي، العقَّاد، جبران، شوقي، مطران، الريحاني وغيرهم، هيكلوا فكريّاً مجتمعَ العشرينيَّات حتى الخمسينيَّات، لكنَّهم تركوه معلِّقاً داخل حداثة مستحيلة، شكّلتها المنظومة الدينيَّة والفكرُ المحافظ.
