الحديث في هذا الكتاب يساق أصلاً إلى أسامة بن زيد القدوة الصالحة للشباب المسلم المؤمن في كل زمان ومكان. فقد كان وهو في العقد الثاني من العمر من أكبر قادة المسلمين وحسبه أنه وهو في الثامنة عشرة من عمره قاد جيش المسلمين لغزو دولة الروم. وبث الرعب في قلوبهم. وحسب أسامة أن النبي عليه الصلاة والسلام هو الذي اختاره بنفسه لقيادة هذا الجيش وبيمينه عقد له اللواء. وقال له: اغز باسم الله وفي سبيل الله فقاتل من كفر بالله. لكن الحديث عن أسامة يدعو للحديث عن أبيه زيد بن حارثة, والحديث عن زيد بن حارثة لا يكون إلا بالحديث عن الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم فقد نشأ زيد في كنفه.
