العراق بلد قديم جداً كان مهد الحضارات السومرية والاكادية والآشورية والبابلية فُتح العراق في السنوات الاولى من حكم العرب المسلمين وفي العهد العباسي كان العراق بعاصمته بغداد مركز الخلافة الاسلامية وقطب العالم حتى جاء المغول ودخلوا بغداد فدمروها وقضوا على الخلافة سنة 656هـ/1258م . وبعد المغول جاء دور العثمانيين الذين استولوا عليه سنة 1658م.أثبتت الحفائر الأثرية والادلة الأنثروبولوجية أن العراق كان يعيش حياة مستقرة في عصور ما قبل التاريخ من الألف الرابع قبل الميلاد ونظراً لما تتسم به أرض العراق من مميزات جغرافية فريدة فقد كانت من مواطن الاستقرار البشري الأولى في العالم وقد نشأت على شواطئ النهرين دجلة والفرات وروافدهما وتطورت أولى المدن والمراكز الحضارية في العالم وفيها بدأت اولى محاولات الإنسان للكتابة والتربية والتعليم المنظم وصياغة منظومات قانونية والاكتشافات في ميادين الطب والكيمياء والرياضيات والفلك والابداع في مجالات الفنون والآدب وازدهار التجارة والصناعة وغيرها وغدت تلك المحاولات الأساس الذي قامت عليه الحضارة العراقية القديمة.
