ظافر القاسمي هو أديب ومحامي سوري، ولد في دمشق عام 1913م، وتوفي في باريس عام 1984م، درس في المدرسة السلطانية مكتب عنبر، وتعلم اللغة الفرنسية وأتقنها، درس في الجامعة السورية ومارس المحاماة، وأسس مكتب النشر العربي ولكن سرعان ما أغلقه في الحرب العالمية الثانية، انتسب إلى الكتلة الوطنية، وانتخب نقيباً للمحامين واعتقل في عهد الشيشكلي وهو معتصم بدار النقابة، ذهب إلى المملكة العربية السعودية كمستشار قانوني لوزارة التجارة والصناعة لمدة 3 سنوات ثم عاد بعدها لبيروت ليدرس في الجامعة اللبنانية للأدب العربي إلى جانب عمله كمستشار قانوني لدى بعض المؤسسات الاقتصادية الكبيرة، وعندما اندلعت الحرب الأهلية اللبنانية فر إلى باريس، فرنسا، فاستقر لبقية حياته هناك أستاذاً للأدب والحضارة الإسلامية في جامعة باريس، توفي إثر أزمة قلبية فنقلت جثته إلى مقبر الأسرة في دمشق.

عاش القاسمي معظم حياته في أشد أيام الظلم والظلام. فقد ولد ونظام الحكم المطلق قائم في الدولة العثمانية، مما يذكر مآسيه الكثيرون من المعاصرين حتى اليوم. فالحريات بجميع أنواعها مفقودة، والأقلام مغلولة، والعقول مقيدة، والدستور معلق، وأعوان السلطان وزبانيته مبثوثون في كل مكان، والعدالة تكاد تكون مفقودة لفساد النظام القضائي، في هذا الجو الخانق والمتخلف في جميع مراحل الحياة السياسية والاجتماعية والاقتصادية والثقافية وغيرها، نشأ القاسمي، فكان كالطائر المغني في غير سربه، غريباً عن أهل الزمان، ولعل هذا كله كان أدعى لإقدامه، والقناعة برسالته، وضرورة العمل لها، والسعي لنشرها، والمضي في تبليغها. فقد كان لنشأة القاسمي في بيت عرف بالعلم والتقوى أثر كبير في توجيهه الوجهة التي تولاها، واختاره الله لها.
