يتناول هذا الكتاب علاقة الإنسان بالحيوانات منذ البدايات الأولى لتكون الإنسان على سطح الأرض, أي منذ ظهور إنسان جاوة (قبل 500ألف سنة) وحتى ظهور الإنسان الحالي, مروراً بإنسان بكين (قبل أربعين ألف سنة). وإنسان كرومانيون (قبل حوالي 30 ألف سنة) الذي يعتبر بكل المقاييس من سلالة الإنسان الحالي واستند في دراسة هذه العلاقة إلى الرسوم والنقوش والمنحوتات الحجرية التي تركها لنا فنانوا ما قبل التاريخ, إضافة إلى الطقوس الاحتفالية الدينية التي لم تزل تمارسها مجموعات السكان الأصليين للعديد من القارات, والتي تعتبر استمراراً تاريخياً للطقوس التي كانت تمارسها الشعوب البدائية في العصور الغابرة. كما يتناول الكتاب الأسباب والكيفية التي تحولت فيها علاقة الإنسان بالحيوان من علاقة المنفعة والإعجاب إلى علاقة الحب والتقديس ومن ثم إلى التأليه والعبادة لدى شعوب الحضارات القديمة.
ويورد الكتاب تاريخ الاكتشافات في حقل علم الحيوان بدءاً من أرسطو وحتى داروين, والمخاطر التي يتعرض لها عالم الحيوان في القرون الأخيرة وضرورة حماية البيئة من أجل استمرار حضارة الإنسان على الأرض. ويتعرض الكتاب أيضاً إلى الأجهزة البيولوجية الفائقة الدقة الموجودة لدى بعض الحيوانات وإمكانية الاستفادة منها أو محاكاتها في صنع أجهزة متطورة في الكثير من المجالات وبخاصة في مجال الكشف المبكر عن الزلازل والبراكين والأعاصير البحرية المدمرة وعمليات التنبؤ بأحوال الطقس.
