ليس عجيباً أن يكون تاريخ المسلمين كغيرهم من الأمم ذوات الحضارة والأمجاد مليئاً بالصفحات المشرقات. ومن الطبيعي، أن لا يخلو ذلك التاريخ من صفحات أخرى تعلوها الظلال. وربما كان حادث مقتل الخليفة "عثمان بن عفان" رضي الله عنه الذي اصطلح على تسميته بـ"الفتنة" و"وقعة الجمل" اقتم تلك الصفحات، فهذا الحدث المروع كان نقطة تحول في تاريخ المسلمين، وبداية للانهيار الذي لم تظهر آثاره مباشرة بحكم الاستمرار بتلك الدفعة القوية التي ولدها عهد صدر الإسلام السابق لذلك التاريخ بدأ الخلاف سياسياً وانتهى مذهبياً عقائدياً، فانقسمت الأمة إلى مذاهب شتى بأسه بينها شديد، تتبادل الطعون حتى التكفير، ولا تتورع عن الاقتتال حتى الموت، فأدى التعصب والتحيز إلى ندرة في الروايات وتضارب بينها.
وهذا الكتاب من أقدم الكتب التي اعتمدها الطبري وأضرابه لتأريخ حوادث صدر الإسلام وتحديداً مقتل الخليفة الثالث للمسلمين و"واقعة الجمل" فهو رواية متسلسلة كاملة، يسرد حوادث واقعية قوامها دفاع الصحابة عن الشريعة واستعدادهم للموت في سبيل ما يؤمنون به ويعتقدون صوابه.
