رامبرانت صوّر نفسه بوضوح، في الرسم الزيتي وفي النقش على المعادن وفي التخطيطات، ما يقارب المائة مرة. وفي كل مرة من هذه المرات نتعلم أكثر عن رامبرنت. إلى حدّ ما، حقّق رامبرنت متطلبات يونج وعرض الشخصية في رسومه كظاهرة متطورة. تقنياً، كانت سمته التقدم بحذق متزايد في مضمون اللوحة. تبدو النفس في رسومه تخترق القناع المرسوم وتجعل منه تسجيلاً مهتزاً لحياة الفنان الداخلية. لكن رامبرانت كان يشعر بوضوح أن هذه الدرجة من الكشف ليست كافية وأن الشخصية تتحطّم تدريجيّاً تحت ضغط الواقع و الوجه يفقد نعومته وتناسقه وتماسكه. / هربرت ريد 1955
