عنى المحبّي، مصنف هذا الكتاب، بتراجم أعيان القرى الحادي عشر حتى غدا مؤلّفه بأجزائه الأربعة موسوعة لرجال ذلك الزمان، من أدباء وشعراء وأمراء، حيث جمع في هذا المصنف ما لم يجمع من ذي قبل، ووقع اختياره على إضافة كل أثر إلى ترجمة من أسند إليه، حسبما يعوّل من له مساس في باب التاريخ عليه، وقد استعان على ذلك ببعض ما ألف في هذا المجال من كتب مثالها: ذيل النجم الغزي وطبقات الصوفية للمناوي وتاريخ الحسن البوريني وذيله لوالده فضلا لله بن محب الله، وخبايا الزوايا والريحانة للخنفاجي وذكرى حبيب للبديعي ومنتزه العيون والألباب لعبد البر الفيومي، هذا ما عدا ما جمعه من الأفواه والمكاتبات. وقد رتب المصنف مؤلفه بالترتيب الألفبائي، وإذا تعددت الأسماء لأحرف من الحروف يقدم الأسبق وفاة، ومن فاته ذكر اسم أبيه رأى سبق الوفاة ويكتفي حينها بذكر الكنية أو اللقب إذا اشتهر صاحب الترجمة بأحدهما. ويذكر بعد ذلك النسبة إلى البلد ثم الأصل ثم المذهب غالباً ولا يروى عنه من أخبار إلا ما تحقق خبره من ثقات.
