موضوع هذا الكتاب طريف، حيث يقول المؤلف في مقدمة الكتاب: "وقد جمعت في هذا الكتاب ما وقع إليً وعرفته وسمعت به وشاهدته من أخبار من قال شعراً في غربة، ونطق عما به من كربة، وأعلن الشكوى بوجوده إلى كل مشرد عن أوطانه، ونازح الدار عن إخوانه، فكتب بما لقي على الجدران، وباح بسره في كل حانة وبستان. إذ كان ذلك قد صار عادة الغرباء في كل بلد ومقصد، وعلامة بينهم في كل محضر ومشهد".
ونحن نجد أولاً، فيما قاله أبو الفرج، أصالة الموضوع. فلم يسبق أحد من القدامى إلى جمع مثل هذه الأخبار والأشعار، وإن كنا نجد بعضها مفرقة في كتب الأدب. ثم نجد في الكتاب هذه المجموعة الغنية من العواطف الإنسانية، التي تثيرها الغربة، أو الفراق: من حنين، ولوعة، وشكوى، وعذاب، وتلهف وأماني، مسطرة في بلدان الدنيا، المتباعدة، على الحيطان والجدران.
وثمة ميزة أخرى لهذا الكتاب، هو أن معظم أخباره لا توجد في مصادر أخرى، إلا القليل المعدود منها، وما نجده في هذه الكتب، معظمه منقول عن أبي الفرج.
وميزة رابعة، يختص بها هذا الكتاب، تظهر في أن بعض نصوصه لنا أضواء جديدة على حياة أبي الفرج، سواء في اتصاله ببعض معاصريه، أو في انطلاقه في اللهو، أو في حياته ومقدار عمره.
