تنهل الفلسفة الفارابية من منابع عدة، تصدر بمجملها عن الفلسفة اليونانية، ولا سيما تعاليم أفلاطون وأرسطو اللذين حاول الفارابي التوفيق بينهما، كما حاول التوفيق بين الدين والفلسفة أي بين المعرفة بالوحي، والمعرفة بالعقل، ومن ثم تعاليم الأفلاطونية المستحدثة، وعلى الأخصّ المؤسس الحقيقي لهذا المذهب، وهو أفلوطين الذي اهتدى إلى نظرية الانبثاق أو الفيض Emanation، فظن أن في هذه النظرية حلاً لمشكلة الخلق.
وتنهل الفلسفة الفارابية أيضاً من تعاليم الدين الإسلامي، ومن آراء الكندي الملقب بفيلسوف العرب كما لا ينكر دارس تأثير البيئة والعصر في فلسفة أبي نصر، مما تردد صداه في النظريات المختلفة التي تضمنتها تصانيفه الكثيرة.
في هذا الإطار تأتي الدراسة في هذا الكتاب والتي يحاول الباحث من خلالها الإحاطة بمختلف جوانب الفكر الفارابي، فلسفة، ومنطقاً، أخلاقاً وسياسة، حيث يقصّر دراسته حول فكرة واحدة أو حول كتاب واحد من كتب أبي نصر، بل قدم للقارئ صورة تكاد تكون كاملة، عن أهم الخطوط الرئيسية والاتجاهات الفكرية التي تميّز بها "المعلم الثاني"، ويمكن الذهاب إلى أبعد من ذلك للقول بأن استناد الباحث في دارسته عن السياسة المدنية، لدى الفارابي، إلى كتابيه "آراء أهل المدينة الفاضلة" و"رسالة في السياسة"، يدلّ على بعد نظر الباحث في الربط ما بين المجتمع والساسة، لا سيما وهو القائل في مقدمة الفصل الذي يحمل عنوان "المدينة الفاضة ومضاداتها": أن السياسة في الأصل هي فن إدارة المجتمع، وفق أصول وشرائط تنتهي به إلى حياة فضلى. فضلاً عن بلوغ الباحث محجة الصواب في الدراسة، حين أبرز النواتئ والتناقضات، في مواقف الفارابي من خلال المصنفين الشهيرين.
