تتمحور قيمة هذه المجموعة من المختارات الأدبية في تعريفك بأكثر من 220 شاعرًا حديثاً، كلهم ُولدوا في القرن العشرين، ستقرأ لهم للمرة الأولى – على الأغلب – من خلال هذا الكتاب. قد اخترت في هذه المجموعة ألا أسرد المختارات على ترتيب محدد؛ وذلك إتمامًا للمتعة بتنوع المقروء واختلافه. وكذا لم أرتب المختارات ترتيباً منطقياً؛ لكي يشابه سردها ما يعتري النفس البشرية من مشاعر، ولتجد نفسك تضحك وتبكي وتحن وتأسى دون ترتيب واضح، محاولًا أن أتقمص ما يتردد بين جنبيك! وتجاوزت أن أرتب المختارات ترتيبًا إقليميًا؛ إيمانًا مني بأن الوطن العربي واحد. فتجد نفسك تحتضن ليلكة دمشقية، وتنهل بعدها من دجلة الخير، ثم تنزل بباب صنعاء، وتصلي بعد ذلك في المسجد الأقصى، وتتيه بعدها في حارات القاهرة، وتتأمل جنات المغرب، وتنتشي بانتصار بلاد عمر المختار، وتغني مع جماهير تونس بأنك تريد الحياة، وتعود لتعيش ليالي بيروت الحالمة، وتشاهد بتراء الأردن، وترتحل لتتمتع من شميم عرار نجد، وتُسبِّح في الحجاز. وتَسْبح في الخليج دون خط سير واضح. تطرب حيناً لشدو الرجال وتنتشي حيناً لأنَّات النساء. تجد عن يمينك شيخاً أنهكتْه الأيام، وعن يسارك شاباً أرقته الأحلام. تسامر عاشقًا يشكي، وغريبًا يبكي، وأباً يُذَكِّر، وابناً يتذكّر.. تجلس بين يدي عارفٍ بالله، ثم تتناوشك أيدي أهل الدنيا والمال. تناصر مرةً من اختار أن يبتهل على أرض الشهادة، وتربت على كتف من أُجبر على أن ينوح من أرض المنفى. ولم أتبع خطاً زمنياً للشعراء أو للمختارات؛ لأن ما تهمنا في الحقيقة هما اللحظتان: لحظة كتابة الشعر ولحظة قراءته.
