إن النظريتين اللتين يتكون منهما علم الإقتصاد هما النظرية الإقتصادية الجزئية والنظرية الإقتصادية الكلية، ذلك أنه شاع في بحر الثلاثينات من هذا القرن هذا التمايز الذي ما زال يكتسب أهمية متعاظمة بين هذين النوعين من فروع علم الإقتصاد، وبالتالي فإن التحليل الإقتصادي يتشعب إلى فرعين رئيسيين هما: "التحليل الإقتصادي الجزئي"، "التحليل الإقتصادي الكلي".
يهتم الإقتصاد الجزئي بدراسة الظواهر الإقتصادية على مستوى الوحدة الجزئية، ولقد بات من المسلمات في التحليل الإقتصادي الجزئي إعتبار العائلة الواحدة أي الأسرة بمثابة الوحدة الجزئية في الإستهلاك والمنتج او المشروع بمثابة الوحدة الجزئية الأساسية في الإنتاج.
ويفترض في إطار التحليل الجزئي أن المستهلك يهدف إلى تعظيم إشباعه أو منفعته عبر قرارات عقلانية، بينما يبحث المشروع أو المنتج عن أقصى ربح ممكن عبر تصرفات عقلانية وقرارات ملائمة.
ويتطرق الإقتصاد الكلي إلى تحليل المستوى التجميعي للنشاط الإقتصادي ككل، كالدخل الوطني، مستوى التشغيل، مستوى الأسعار إلى غير ذلك، بحيث يقدم صورة شاملة عن الإقتصاد ككل.
هناك العديد من الكتب التي تناولت موضوع الإقتصاد الجزئي بالدراسة والتحليل، ولكن معظم هذه الدراسات اقتصرت على الجوانب النظرية فقط، غير أن لهذا الكتاب توجهاً خاصاً، حيث يعمل على تقديم نظرية الإقتصاد الجزئي من الجانب العملي التطبيقي في شكل تمرينات وتطبيقات مختارة مع حلولها النموذجية لفهم وإستيعاب الجوانب النظرية بإستعمال البيانات والوسائل التقنية الرياضية.
