كان هنري إده قد وضع الدراسات الأولى لإعمار وسط بيروت، وعمل على تبنيها. إلا أنه وجد نفسه ملزما بالتخلي عن مهتمه حالما اكتشف أن أصحاب القرار يريدون حرفها عن غرضها العالم لخدمة أغراضهم الخاصة. فلم يكف، مذاك، عن فضح هذه "السلطة المكتسبة بالمال والمصونة بالمال". إنه، فضلاً عما تفضي إليه سلطة المال من اختلاس ومحسوبية وفساد، أراد أن يظهر أن الهجمة الشرسة للمال على الحياة السياسية، الملحوظة في لبنان، من شأنها تقويض أسس الوطن نفسها.
