تشغل كلمة الحضارة بال المفكرين على المستوى العالمين فليس هناك من إجماع حول تعريف دقيق لماهية الحضارة. وعموماً فإن كلمة حضارة تعني مظاهر الرقي العلمي والفني والاجتماعي والأدبي في الحضر والإقامة في الحضر أي التخلق بأخلاق أهل الحضر وعاداتهم. والحضارة الإسلامية تعني كل ما أنتجته الشعوب التي عاشت على الرقعة العريضة من الأرض والتي يحدها غرباً الشريط الصحراوي المداري، الذي يبدأ عند المحيط الأطلسي ويستمر شرقاً حتى سور الصين من إبداعات ومبتكرات. ولعل أهم مظاهر الحضارة الإسلامية أنها استطاعت أن تؤثر تأثيراً كبيراً في جميع الشعوب التي خضعت للدولة الإسلامية، وهي صالحة كل زمان ومكان.
وفي هذا الكتاب يدرس المؤلف معالم الحضارة الإسلامية من خلال استقصاء منجزات هذه الحضارة وقطوفها إبان عمرها الذهبي وعلى الرغم من كثرة المؤلفات في هذا المجال إلا أن كتاباً جامعاً لكل هذه الإسهامات المادية والمعرفية والأخلاقية والجمالية لم يظهر بعد.
ويحاول هذا الكتاب سد هذا النقص رغم أن الضرورة اقتضت الإيجاز والدقة في تناول المعلومات حتى يسهل فهمها وهضمها دون الدخول في التفصيلات والتفريعات. والمؤلف يمهد لموضوعاته برصد المعالم الأساسية لحضارة العرب قبل الإسلام في مجالات نظم الحكم والحياة الاقتصادية والاجتماعية والدينية والثقافية في محاولة لتبيان مدى ما بقي من تأثيرات لها على الحضارة الإسلامية فيما بعد.
