كانت الإمبراطورية العثمانية دولة إسلامية، وقد انعكست قوانينها الصارمة على الحياة الجنسية، وبناءً على ذلك، كان الذكور مجرد مخلوقات تؤدي الدور الطبيعي في عملية التناسل، فيما اعتبرت النساء كائنات بشرية لا تستطعن سوى الإنقياد لحاجاتهن الجنسية الشديدة.
وعلى الرغم من أن هذا الدافع البيولوجي كان مقيداً بالأحكام الدينية، فقد ظل التسامح قادراً على التأثير في هذه التقييدات الصارمة، كما أخذت الإنحرافات الجنسية التي ترى عند البشر بعين الإعتبار.
فكان لا مناص من حدوث بعض الإنحرافات الجنسية، وهناك بعض النصوص المدونة، وما زالت سليمة حتى الآن، التي تتحدث حول الحياة الجنسية العثمانية، وتتناول بصورة غنية ونابضة بالحياة العلاقات المثلية عند المرأة والرجل، إضافة إلى العلاقات الخنثوية.
على الرغم من جميع التناقضات الواردة سواء في الوثائق المكتوبة أم في السلوك الإجتماعي المتعلق بالجنس، هناك بعض التساهل الذي يسهم بصورة مدهشة في تلطيف القوانين الإسلامية القاسية المتبعة.
ولعل مصدر هذا التساهل هو القصر بالذات، بل السلاطين أنفسهم المفعمين بالشهوات الجسدية التي من شأنها أن تجعل عيونهم نصف مغلقة.
