يحتل الجمل ركناً مهماً من تراث العرب ومكانة معينة في النشاط الزراعي للعديد من الأقطار العربية ذات الطبيعة الصحراوية. والجمل العربي حيوان صبور، شديد التكيف والتأقلم للعيش في ظروف الصحراء القاسية وفق نظام رعوي بدائي، بدوي أو شبه بدوي ومع أهمية تعاظم الجمل وما لعبه ويلعبه من دور متميز في تراث العرب وتقاليد البادية وزراعة البلدان الصحراوية والمناطق القاحلة والجافة، ومع تعاظم واستعمال مشكلة التصحر في العالم، فقد ازدادت أهمية رعاية وتربية الجمل من أجل زيادة إنتاجيته وتحسين كفاءته والتوسع في تربيته.
وتدخل ضمن هذا السياق معرفة الظروف التي تتعلق بانتشار أمراضه وأسرار ظروف التكيف للبيئة وخواصه الفسلجية وأمراضه. وجاء هذا الكتاب الذي يمثل مشاهدات الباحث واستقراءً لما تمّ نشره من خبرات عالمية في ميدان تربية وأمراض الإبل وأسماءه وأشكاله وعادات هذا المخلوق العجيب. لذا فقد ضمّ بين طياته دراسة ميدانية علمية تراثية للإبل من خلال إشارات سريعة لموقعه في الدين والتراث مع نظرة لخصائصه الفسلجية وأقلمته وتكيفه لظروف الصحراء، ومناقشة أهم أمراض الجمل والجدوى الاقتصادية من تربيته، هذا بالإضافة إلى تسليطه الضوء على أهم الأمراض التي يمكن أن تصيب الإبل وسبل تشخيصها وعلاجها، هذا وقد ألحق الكتاب بالعديد من الصور الفوتوغرافية الهامة التي تبين نواحي عديدة من حياة الإبل في الصحراء.
