الكتاب اختصار لعلوم الحديث، ذكر على صفحة العنوان أن الجعبري اعتمد في تصنيفه على مقدمة ابن الصلاح في علوم الحديث ومقدمة كتاب جامع الأصول لابن الأثير وكتاب القاضي القشيري، ولدى المقابلة والتدقيق تبين أنه اعتمد اعتمادا يكاد يكون كليا على مقدمة ابن الصلاح حتى ليمكن القول إن رسوم التحديث مختصر من مختصرات مقدمة ابن الصلاح في علوم الحديث، يمتاز بشدة التركيز لدرجة تقرب من الرمز، فكأنما وضع للعلماء الحفاظ، إذ تذكر الكلمة أو الفقرة منه أحيانا بصفحة كاملة. وهذه النسخة التي حققت كتبت بخط المؤلف نفسه وهي أصلا وقف المدرسة الأحمدية بحلب.
