"واصفر لونها، وامتقع، وبدت متهالكة متخاذلة، كأنما لمستها عصا الشيخوخة، لمستها السحرية، وكثيراً ما تتلمس أغراض يان وحوائجه تستأنس بريحها، وأكثر ما يستهويها منها بذلة العرس فتنشرها وتطويها وتنشرها لتعود إلى طيها: فعل الهواة. وأما ما كانت لا تملّ التأمل فيه فهو لباس بحرين "ليان" ما زال يحفظ تقاطيع جسده، فهي تضعه أمامها على الطاولة وتستوحي منه تقاطيع جسمه الضخم وتتخيله تمثالاً له محدداً. وانتهى بها حب هذا اللباس إلى أن وضعته في مكان لوحده لتبقي طياته كما هي بحيث لا يذهب عنه نفور الكتفين وانتفاخ الصدر. ويغشى الأرض ضباب بارد كثيف في كل مساء، فتنظر هي من خلال النافذة إلى الفضاء الأبيض الشاحب الحزين، فيسترعي انتباهها بعض نفثات من الدخان الأبيض الشاحب الحزين، فيسترعي انتباهها، بعض نفثات من الدخان الأبيض تتصاعد من أفواه المداخن الناتئة من سقوف أكواخ الآخرين. في هذه الأكواخ كلها يسكن الرجال مع زوجاتهم وقد عادوا جميعهم من بعيد كالطيور الراحلة التي يلجئها البرد إلى الأماكن الدافئة. وأمام كثير من هذه المدافئ المشتعلة تكون السهرة ممتعة حتماً مسلية حتماً، في جوّ مشبع بالحنان والحب والعطف. أليس الحب يزهر في الخريف ويعقد في الشتاء في هذا الطرف من بلاد صيادي إيسلندا؟ ويقوي الأمل في نفسها ويساعدها على الانتظار تمسكها الشديد بفكرة لجوئه إلى هذه الجزر التي سماها والده".
"صياد إيسلندا" هي رائعة من روائع الأدب الكلاسيكي الفرنسي تناول فيه المؤلف بيار لوتي قصة شعب كادح يعيش كسمك السلمون على التنقل من محيط إلى آخر سعياً وراء الرزق منهم من يعود إلى دياره، ومنهم من يبتلعه البحر.
