للشعر مكوناته وطرق أدائه, وله تميزه الذي تفرضه طبيعته التعبيرية, المختلفة عن فنون الأدب الأخر, ويعد فقدان أحد مكوناته نقصاً قد يقوض انتماء الكلام الى نوع الشعر المنتمي إلى فنون الأدب. وتعد الصورة الشعرية خصيصة تكوينية جوهرية في كيان الشعر, يحقق الشعر بفضلها وجوده, لذا كانت هدفاً للدراسات التي لا يمكن الوقوف على مقدارها بيسر وهي تحاول الإحاطة بهذه الخصيصة, معطية إياهم مفاهيم, ومسبغة عليها وجهات نظر تحتكم إلى مستوى إدراك من يتناولها واتجاهه الفكري, وعمق ثقافته. وهناك عدة تساؤلات حول هذه الدراسة فجاء هذا الكتاب للإجابة عنها فقد تناول المحاولات الأولى للتوسع بالصورة الشعرية في الشعر العربي القديم, وألقى الضوء على ما تعرض لها من جهود في النقد العربي القديم, الذي لم يهتم كثيراً بهذه المحاولات أو لم يفرد لها مفاهيم خاصة بها, ويعود سبب ذلك إلى ندرتها في الشعر العربي آنذاك. ومن أهم ما تناوله الكتاب: إرساء مفهوم للصورة الكلية ببيان ما تقوم عليه من أسس تمثل الأصول التي يتوافر عليها كل نموذج من نماذجها, الأبنية والدلالات, أهم الوظائف التي يمكن للصورة الكلية أن تؤديها شعرياً.
