وُجِد المحرّم بدايةً ليَحُدِّ من العنف، العنف الذي ينشب بين الأفراد، حول شيء ما، كلٍّ يريده لنفسه، وهكذا جاء التحريم الجنسي بين الأقارب ليوقف الإقتتال بين الرجال في القبيلة.
وكل خرقٍ لهذا التحريم يُعَدُّ إنما ويتطلب عقاباً قاسياً، تنوَّعت أساليبه في المجتمعات البدائية، وحين خرج مجتمع الدولة من رَحِمِ مجتمع القبيلة، تطوَّر المحرّم وأسبغَت عليه صفات المقدس لتلحق بمنتهِكِه لعنة المقدس وعقابه، عقابه، الذي يتطلّب لتنفيذه قيَّماً على الأرض.
تنوع المحرّم ليدخل في مناخٍ عديدة من حياة المجتمع وسلوكه ليشكل منظومة من الأوامر والنواهي تطال العلاقة بين الناس والمقدس من جهة وعلاقة الناس فيما بينهم، ضمن إطار عام يشمل الحقوق والواجبات يسبب عدم الإلتزام بها، إساءة تستوجب غضب الله وعقابه.
وكانت غاية المحرّم من ذلك منح الأمن والسلام للمجتمع كي يتفرّغ أبناؤه إلى بناء وتطوير حياة غنية وسعيدة.
لكن المحرَّم قد ينقلب إلى النقيض ويصبح كابوساً مرعباً يُدخل المجتمع في دائرة عنف أشد، وذلك حين تختلط نصوص محرّم المقدس بنصوص السلطان والفئة المتحكمة الهادفة إلى تغييب نصوص المقدس لتحل محلّها أو لتتداخل معها، حسب الحاجة، وتُغيِّب حينئذ المجتمع برمته.
هذا هو ما يتناوله هذا الكتاب، كيف جرى تصنيع النص المزيف وحلَّ محل النص المقدس أو تداخل معه، وكيف وُظِّف المحرّم ليخدم مآرب خاصة، اكتوى بها المجتمع منذ زمن بعيد وما يزال.
