ليس أمراً نادراً أن نواجه بين الحين والآخر بعض الأسئلة في التاريخ السوري القديم مما لا نجد له جواباً. وأسباب ذلك سيشعر بها تلقائياً القارئ المتمعن في فصول هذا الكتاب، الذي يمكن اعتباره "نتفا" من تاريخ لا تحيط به معلوماتنا حتى الآن بصورة كاملة.
والحقيقة التي يعلمها الكثيرون، أنه لم يظهر حتى الآن كتاب في التاريخ السوري القديم توفر فيه التكامل وانطبقت عليه شروط التاريخ بمعناه الدقيق.
ولما كان الدكتور "عبد الله الحلو" لا يعلم فإن ما اعتبره "نتفاً" من هذا التاريخ الموغل في القدم، إنما هو مما تتناقله الأوساط التاريخية العالمية كمعلومات واضحة، رغم أن بعضها ما زال معرضاً للتغيير أو النقض في أي وقت كان.
وهذا العمل الذي هو حلقة من سلسلة أعمال في التاريخ السوري ما زالت قيد الإعداد، إنما عنوانه بـ"صراع الممالك في التاريخ السوري القديم" كون المعلومات التي اجتمعت فيه تتعرض إلى ما هو واضح من جوانب تاريخية ومقومات حضارية لممالك عديدة مختلفة الأحجام والمواقع والأدوار والأعمار، تزامن بعضها وتعاقب البعض الآخر على الأرض السورية بمفهومها الجغرافي الواسع، أو البقعة التي عرفت باسم "الهلال الخصيب"، وطبعت حياتها في أغلب مراحلها بالصراع، إما ضد بعضها البعض، أو ضد قوى خارجية، الأمر الذي يشير إليه في الفقرة الأولى من المدخل العام للكتاب. وبتعبير آخر فإن الإطار العام لهذا العمل تنحصر فيه الخطوط الكبرى لفترة زمنية بداياتها في عصر الممالك السومرية القديمة بجنوب الرافدين، أي اعتباراً من الألف الرابع قبل الميلاد، ونهايتها مع نهاية المملكة التدمرية في بلاد الشام في أواخر القرن الثالث الميلادي.
