"كأنه كان يجب أن أبقى في تلك الأرض. أرضي. هناك، بين بساتين القرى التي كنّا نعيش فيها خمسة أشهر كلّ عام. كأنه كان يجب أن أبقى ابنة تلك الأرض، تنشق في كل مرة لتبرعم، لتبرعمني وأتفتح وأقطف وأذبل وأتوالد. لا أُصدّر ولا أُهدى. أظل ابنة أرضي. لكنّي يا توركان ولدت على الحافة. في الشق. في نصف الشيء، وفي القسمة الأولى التي لا يمكن إلا أن تكون اثنين. رأيتني أهز رأسي في غرفة نومي في المشتمل الصغير. جنتي التي أسميتها بغداد الصغيرة، أشرب من استكان الشاي الذي أصبح بديلاً لفنجان قهوتي. أفطر مع أمه وأخوته البطاطا المقلية وتشريب الباقلاء بدلاً من أطباق اللبنة والزعتر بالزيت والزيتون، أتهجأ اللغة العراقية التي ستصبح لهجتي. أحمل طفلتي وألعب بها مثل دمية. لم أكن صغيرة إلى حدّ السذاجة أو الهبل. كنت في الرابعة والعشرين، لكن قلبي لم يكبر عن الرابعة عشرة. قلب مشقوق أيضاً، بين الطاعة والترتيب وأسرارنا التي تجعلني الأقوى هناك. في غرفتنا، ثم في صباح اليوم التالي وأنا أتلقى التمويلات من أختي أو أخي، أو الهدايا التي أوزعها على أخوة سليم الصغار وأنافسهم في الحماس والفرح، ثم أقدم الجورب والشال لماما أم سليم وأقبّل يدها. أسمع علياء آخر أغنيات فيروز التي تصلني في كاسيتات فتسألني عن "نيّالك ويسطفلو وحلّ عني".. لم يعرف أحد عمر قلبي، ربما حتى سليم، مثلما لم أعف، ولن أعرف عمر قلب ابنتي، ظللت سنوات، وما زلت أتساءل: ماذا رفّ داخل قلبها؟ في تلك اللحظة التي كانت تلوّح لي فيها وهي بين يدي عمتها، عند سياج باب حديقة بيتنا في حيّ الشرطة وهي تلعق التفاحة المغمّسة بطبقة السكّر والمجمّد، وعيناها تسألان؟
