يقدم الكتاب أبياتاً من قصائد الشاعر المخضرم زيد الخيل, ففي تجميع أبيات القصيدة وترتيبها لم يكن يعتمد وحدة الوزن والقافية مقياساً قاطعاً على أن الأبيات من قصيدة واحدة, فالشاعر قد تكون له غير قصيدة على بحر وقافية, ولكنا كنا نقطع الشك بنسبة بعضها الى بعض فيما يرد من أبيات مشتركة بين الروايات المتعددة والمتفاوتة في عدتها.
والكتاب فيه ضبط للصورة اللفظية للشعر بالمقابلة ما بين الروايات بيتاً بيتاً وفق تسلسل الترتيب, وأياً كان الاختلاف فقد اثبتت صورته. وتم الاقتصار في تفسير الشعر على التفسير اللغوي وفي موازنة بين الشروح وترجيح ما بينها بالأدلة والقرائن, وقد تم تقديم شعر زيد الخيل بدراسة تاريخية أدبية مركزة تضع الشعر والشاعر حيث كان من قبيلته, وأحداث عصره, وأدب ذلك العصر واتجاهاته, فاشتمل ذلك التقديم على ثلاثة فروع: قبيلة الشاعر, وسيرته, وخصائص أدبه. ويعتبر شعر الحرب أوسع أغراضه طرقاً وفيه تغيب جملة من أغراض فرعية, وأن منه ما تهيمن عليه روح قبلية غالبة, وأن منه ما تسيطر عليه فردية ظاهرة. وخيرما امتاز به شعر شاعرنا الأصالة والواقعية.
