السؤال الأصعب للباحث في يسوع التاريخ هو هل وجد هذا الشخص تاريخياً؟ وإن كان قد وجد كيف ننزع عنه كل التراكمات الأسطورية لنعرف هذا الرجل الحكيم الذي من جليل فلسطين، والذي تبعه بعض الناس ثم تخلوا عنه لحظة موته، لكنهم تغيروا من جديد، وابتدأوا يبشرون بتعاليمه ويقدمون حياتهم على غراره.
هذا ما سأدرسه في كتاب يسوع التاريخ الذي يشمل جزئين، يحتوي الأول على الكتابات المسيحية الأولى، التي لم تعترف ببعضها الجماعة المسيحية التقليدية لأسباب مختلفة، مشيراً إلى التيارات اللاهوتية المختلفة في القرون الثلاثة الأولى لميلاد يسوع، مع ترجمة العديد من الأناجيل والكتابات غير القانونية ودراستها، خصوصاً المكتشفة في نجع حمادي في منتصف القرن العشرين.
في الجزء الثاني سيكون الكلام عن الأناجيل القانونية مع محاولة نزع الإضافات التاريخية التي لا تمت ليسوع التاريخ. سيشمل هذا الجزء أيضاً بحثوا في العقائد الكبرى كالتجسد والثالوت والصلب والقيامة بطريقة موضوعية.
السؤال الثاني بالنسبة ليسوع التاريخ هو الشق الآخر من حقيقة يسوع، هل كان المسيح؟ أي البعد اللاهوتي لهذا الرجل، أو مسيح الإيمان؟
هل يبقى يسوع التاريخ مثيراً للجدل وجاذباً للملايين من الأتباع إذا جردناه من مسيح اللاهوت؟ هل يسوع "رينان" (الباحث اللاهوتي من القرن التاسع عشر الذي حاول أن ينزع الأسطورة والسيرة الدرامية ليسوع التاريخ) يشبه ما يؤمن به المسيحيون؟
