الحلاج 224_309هـ /858_922م الحسين بن منصور الحلاج فيلسوف عده البعض في كبار المتعبدين والزهاد واعده اخرون في زمرة الزنادقة والملحدين. اصله من بيضاء فارس، ونشأ بواسطة العراق، وظهر أمره سنة 299 فاتبع بعض الناس طريقته في التوحيد والايمان وقيل:كان يظهر مذهب الشيعة للملوك 0العباسين) ومذهب الصوفية للعامة. وكثرت الواشيات به الى المقتدر العباسي فأمر بالقبض عليه فسجن وعذب وضرب وقطعت اطرافه الاربعة ثم قطع رأسه واحرقت جثته والقي رمادها في نهر دجلة ونصب رأسه على جسر بغداد.
بغداد والحلاج معادلة مترابطة عضويا ونفسيا وجغرافيا عند (لويس ماسينون) اما المعادلة الكبرى التي يطرحها الكتاب هي نتجت عن تفاعلات (بغداد والحضارة) و(التصوف والحلاج) و(ماسينون والمأساة) بالأمس، وفي حاضرة (عيون الباحثين العراقيين ) في القرن العشرين من خلال توسط (بغداد) بين ( الحلاج) و(ماسينون ) لتتفاعل فلسفيا داخل هذا الكتاب الذي توزعت ابحاثه على محورين:

الثاني: اللب والجوهر والصلب (خاص )
