ألف الحافظ ابن حجر كتابه "فتح الباري في شرح صحيح البخاري" حيث لم يترك شيئاً يتعلق بالجامع الصحيح إلا وأتى به سواء من حيث المتون والأسانيد والشواهد وفقه الحديث. فألف العيني كتابه "عمدة القاري في شرح صحيح البخاري" وجعله كأنه رد على الحافظ ابن حجر في فتح الباري، فكان كثيراً ما يبتر عبارة الحافظ أو ينقلها محرفة أو مشوهة ليكون هناك مجالاً للاعتراض عليه مما لم يكن له فائدة. فانبرى له الحافظ في كتابه "انتقاض الاعتراض" الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا بجزئيه حيث أجاب فيه على تلك الاعتراضات التي ساقها العيني في شرحه "عمدة القاري"، وأجاب عنها إجابة جيدة، ولكنه اقتصر على الاعتراضات المهمة منها، حيث تصرف أحياناً في عبارة الفتح، وأوضح أحياناً ما أورده في الفتح بالزيادة والبيان، وقد يذكر الحافظ عبارة الفتح وعبارة العمدة ولا يعلق على ذلك بل يكل ذلك إلى القارئ الفهم ليكون هو الحكم العدل. وقد جاء الكتاب هذا محققاً بمنهجية علمية راعى فيها محققاه أصول التحقيق.
