إن من أعظم الانحرافات التي حصلت في وقت مبكر من هذا الدين؛ الاغترار بالعقل. وقد بدأ ذلك على أيدي المعتزلة، واستمر أتباعهم يتوارثون فكرهم ويظهرون دعاواهم في كل عصر بما يلائمه، فاستوحوا من العقل ما لا يبلغه، وحاكموه فيما لا يحيطه، فكان الانحراف والزيغ والضلال. وقد تصدى أئمة الإسلام للرد على هؤلاء، ودحض حججهم من أول ظهورهم، واستمر ذلك التصدي في فترات زمنية معينة.
وهذا ما دعى الباحث الأمين الصادق الأمين لاختيار هذا الموضوع ليكون مادة رسالته لنيل درجة الماجستير في الكتاب والسنة. وقد قسم موضوعه إلى مقدمة وتمهيد وثلاثة أبواب وخاتمة.
تحدث في الباب الأول عن المدرسة العقلية القديمة وقد انصب الحديث فيه على طائفة المعتزلة لما كان لها من أثر بالغ في إعطاء العقل سلطاناً واسعاً حيث حكمته في النصوص. وقد جعلها الباحث مثالاً للمدرسة القديمة. وأما الباب الثاني فقد كان حول المستشرقين وصلتهم بالفكر الإسلامي وأثر تلك الصلة في إثارة الشبهات حول السنة النبوية. ثم موقفهم من صحة الحديث النبوي. وأما الباب الثالث فقد خصصه للحديث عن المدرسة العقلية الحديثة فتحدث عن هذه المدرسة وعلاقتها بالمدرسة العقلية القديمة، وأثر تلك العلاقة في رد الأحاديث النبوية ومن ثم تأثرها بالمستشرقين. وأبرز في الخاتمة أهم النتائج التي توصل إليها من خلال بحثه هذا والذي جاء في جزئين والذي كان على مستوى عال في دقته العلمية ومعالجته الموضوعية لهذا البحث الحساس أو الهام.
