يمكن تصنيف العدوان الإسرائيلي في لبنان، في تموز 2006، بأنه حرب محدودة قياساً إلى حجم القوى والوسائط التي استخدمت، ومحدودية المجال الجغرافي الذي دارت عليه الحرب، ومع ذلك فهي تحمل كل سمات الحرب، بما أوجدته من تداعيات عسكرية وسياسية تتجاوز محدوديتها النسبية، فالتغيير الذي أحدثته الحرب في منطقة الشرق الأوسط تخطّى مجرد المعارك العسكرية بين حزب الله وإسرائيل، ويمكننا أن نطلق عليها تسمية الحرب العربية الإسرائيلية السادسة.
إن تجرب الحرب السادسة، على الرغم من خصوصيتها تعدُّ غنية بالدروس والعبر من الجوانب السياسية والعسكرية، وهي تستحق الدراسة والتحليل، ولهذا جاء هذا البحث في هذه الحرب وفق محاور ثلاثة هي: المحور الأول: يتعلق بالمقدمات الموضوعية التي أدت إلى نشوبها، وإرتباط ذلك بالمشروع الأميركي - الإسرائيلي الذي يستهدف المنطقة، المحور الثاني: يتضمن مجريات الحرب وآليات خوضها على مدى /33/ يوماً، والمواقف السياسية التي رافقت التطورات العسكرية الميدانية وظروف صدور القرار /1701/.
أما المحور الثالث: يبحث في تشخيص نتائج الحرب على الصعيد العسكري والسياسي، ومن ثم تحليل هذه النتائج للوصول إلى الدروس المستفادة في مجال السياسة وفن الحرب.
نشبت الحرب وانتهت تاركة المجال السياسي مفتوحاً للتعامل مع تداعياتها، فلقد كسرت الحرب المعادلة السياسية القائمة ولم يكن انتعاش الذاكرة في مجلس الأنت حصيلة حركة الدبلوماسية العربية بل كان نتيجة الصمود الرائع لحزب الله وهزيمة إسرائيل في الحرب الأم الذي أنتج معادلة ردع وتوازن إقليمي حديدين، ودعماً لقوى المجابهة والمقاومة وأعاد للصراع حيويته، كما قدمت الحرب إمكانية تغيير نظرتنا إلى العدو، وربما إمكانية تصويب السياسات التي رسمت التحرك نحو السلام من قاعدة الخضوع للأمر الواقع، ومقولة استحالة خيار المواجهة العسكرية.
