يتناول هذا الكتاب بالدراسة والتحليل قصيدة الهجاء عند دعبل الخزاعي وإبن الرومي، بطريقة تعيد إلى فن الهجاء جماله وروحه ورونقه. إنها دراسة تقوم على قراءة جديدة في شعر الهجاء، تنبش الكنوز الدفينة فيه، وتقدم تعاريف جديدة مستوحاة من جوهر هذا الفن ورسالته الإنسانية.
يبدأ الكتاب بمقدمة عامة عن فن الهجاء عند الشعراء العرب واليونانيين والإنكليز، واللاتين أيضاً منذ القرن الثاني قبل الميلاد مروراً بالدعوة الإسلامية، ودفاع الشعراء عن دينهم الجديد بالهجاء وبالقتال معاً فتحول الشاعر من شاعر قبيلة إلى شاعرة مسلم مركزه مدينة الرسول يثرب، وصولاً إلى عصر صدر الإسلام وهنا بدأ العهد الأموي حيث دخل الهجاء في الصراع السياسي وتكونت على أثره أحزاب سياسية وتيارات جديدة. ثم دخل الهجاء طوراً آخر في العصر العباسي فأصبح هجاءً للمدن كهجاء أبي نواس للبصرة، وإبن أبي الزوائد لبغداد. وجملة القول أن قصيدة الهجاء تأثرت بكل معانيها وصورها ولغتها بثقافة العصر الذي رافقته.
يقسم الكتاب إلى ثلاثة أبواب تبحث في مقام الشاعرين "دعبل الخزاعي وإبن الرومي" في سلم قصيدة الهجاء عند العرب منذ الجاهلية حتى القرن الثالث.
الباب الأول: عناصر الأحياء والتكوين في شخصية الشاعرين: دعبل الخزاعي وإبن الرومي.
الباب الثاني: أنواع قصيدة الهجاء عند دعبل وإبن الرومي.
الباب الثالث: دراسة تحليلية وتشريحية للعناصر الجمالية في قصيدة الهجاء عند دعبل وإبن الرومي.
