يصور الكتاب الدولة العثمانية منذ نشأتها الأولى في أواخر القرن السابع للهجرة وحتى الربع الأول من القرن الحادي عشر للهجرة أي منذ عهد السلطان عثمان الأول مؤسس الدولة إلى نهاية عهد السلطان مصطفى في سلطنته الأولى. وقد جعله في خمسة عشر باباً وخص كل سلطان من السلاطين الخمسة عشرة بباب منفرد. وفي ترجمته كل سلطان منهم حدد تاريخ سلطنته وأحياناً تاريخ ميلاده وقدم عرضاً لأعماله. وقد أبرز من تلك الأعمال علاقته القاسية بأبنائه أو أخوته المتمثلة بقتل بعضهم ليصفوا له العرش. تنظيماته السياسية للدولة وبخاصة منها إنشاء الجيش الانكشاري. أعماله العسكرية المتمثلة بالحرب الجهادية التي خاضها. علاقته بفئة العلماء. أعماله العمرانية من بناء المساجد والمدارس. وقفياته وبخاصة لصالح الحرمين الشريفين.
