ليو تولستوي روائياً ومصلحاً اجتماعياً وداعية سلام ومفكّراً أخلاقياً. أضمر الكاتب الروسي إحتراماً خاصاً للأدب العربي، والثقافة العربية، والأدب الشعبي العربي، فعرف الحكايات العربية منذ طفولته. عرف حكاية "علاء الدين والمصباح السحري" وقرأ "ألف ليلة وليلة"، وعرف حكاية "علي بابا والأربعون حرامي"، وحكاية "قمر الزمان بين الملك شهرمان"، ولقد ذكر هاتين الحكايتين ضمن قائمة الحكايات التي تركت في نفسه أثراً كبيراً، قبل أن يصبح عمره أربعة عشر عاماً.
كفيلسوف أخلاقي اعتنق أفكار المقاومة السليمة النابذة للعنف وتبلور ذلك في كتاب (مملكة الرب داخلك) وهو العمل الذي أثّر على مشاهير القرن العشرين مثل المهاتما غاندي ومارتن لوثر كينج في جهادهما الذي اتّسم بسياسة المقاومة السلمية النابذة للعنف.
إنّ القصص والروايات القصيرة المنشورة في هذا الكتاب كتبها هذا الكاتب الروسي العبقري على مدى نصف قرن، وتشمل نماذج من مجمل إبداعه.
كتب ألكسندر بوشكين: "كلمات الشاعر في أفعاله". وهذه حقيقة عظيمة تنطبق بدرجة غير اعتيادية على ليف تولستوي الذي ظلّ يتحدّث ويكتب بإخلاص متناه عمّا توصّل إليه بضروب الاستقصاء الروحي المجهد، والمعاناه المضئية. وقد كتب في يوميّاته: "يقتطع الشاعر من حياته أفضل ما لديه، ويضعه في إبداعه" و"كتاباتي هي أنا".
إن كتب ليف تولستوي ستظل لقرن عدّة تذكاراً لعمل دؤوب قام به عبقري.
ولعلّ من بين الأعمال التي تنشر في اللغة العربية لأوّل مرّة قصّته المبكرة "غارة" وروايته القصيرة "بوليكوشكا" التي استجاب فيها لإلغاء نظام القنانة في روسيا.
وإلى جانب هذين العملين يضم كتابنا هذا القصّة الفلسفية لتولستوي الشاب "ثلاث ميتات" ثم "أسير القفقاس" التي وضعها الكابت لكتابه المدهش "الأبجدية". وبعد ذلك تأتي رواية تولستوي القصيرة "الذراع" التي كتبها في وقت متأخّر، والتي تذهل بجرأتها غير الاعتيادية في التناول الفنّي. فإنّ شخصيتها الرئيسية، بطلها، حصان عجوز "يفكر" ويناقش".
