لقد أسهمت القصة الملحمية لـ"عملية السلام" في الشرق الأوسط والضجيج والجلبة اللذان أحاطا بها في حجب حقيقة مفادها أنه لم يخضع إلا القليل منها للتحليل المنهجي والموضوعي. كما لم توضع العملية على محك مبادئ المفاوضات على نحو يكفي لتسليط الضوء على طبيعتها الأساسية وجوهرها. وقد حالت هذه المحاذير دون معالجة قضايا مهمة تتعلق ببنية العملية ذاتها وبقدرتها على الوفاء بالوعود والآمال المعلقة عليها. وهي تثير أيضاً تساؤلات حول إن كان بالإمكان الحديث عن سلام حقيقي يجري الإعداد له، أو أن المحاولة بكاملها لا تعدو كونها مجرد خدعة وتلاعب بالألفاظ، وتعني الخدعة هنا "أسلوباً في التعبير، أو لوناً من التفكير، يتمثل أثره، بغض النظر عن الدافع، في أحداث تناقض خادع بين المعنى الطبيعي للكلام ودلالته العلمية".
وإذا أردنا فهم جميع مضامين السياسات الإقليمية والأسس التي تقوم عليها فمن الجدير بالأهمية التذكير من جديد ببعض أساسيات الصراع العربي-الإسرائيلي التي نقدت أو اختفت في متاهة إعلانات السلام، ويجيب ألا يفسر هذا بأنه محاولة لتكرار الجدل والحجج المقابلة التي أثيرت خلال العقود الخمسة الماضية وإفراغها في قالب جديد، وإنما هي محاولة للكشف عن مواطن الخلل النبيوية في السياسات المعدة لمواجهة المأزق الإقليمي الحالي، فالتشخيص الدقيق يساعد على التكهن بحالة المريض. وهذا بالتحديد ما سعى إليه الباحث في دراسته هذه حول دينامية الصراع العربي-الإسرائيلي لاستشفاف ما ورائيات وما أماميات وما بين سطور مفاوضات السلام التي يكثر الحديث عنها في هذه الآونة، إلا أنها يطبق عليها القول: "جعجعة بلا طحن". أو كما يقال: "نسمع جعجعة ولا نرى طحنها".
