في الجزء الأول من هذا الكتاب تراجم رجال القرن الثالث عشر من الدمشقيين مرتبة أسماؤهم على الحروف. ومادة هذا الجزء هي المادة التي استقل بها كتاب المصنف المطبوع في حياته (1947م) واسمه الذي سماه صاحبه به: "روض البشر في أعيان دمشق في القرن الثالث عشر". وتجد في الجزء الثاني منتخباً من تراجم الربعين الأول والثاني من القرن الرابع عشر إلا أن مادة تراجم رجال الربع الأول مفصلة ومادة تراجم الربع الثاني مجملة اجتزئ فيها بذكر اسم المترجم وذكر الوصف الغالب عليه في حياته من علم أو عمل وذكر سنة وفاته. وتراجم رجال هذين الربعين جميعاً مرتبة على سني وفيات المترجمين لا على أسمائهم مرتبة على الحروف. يذكر في كل سنة من توفي فيها من الأعيان ابتداءً من السنة الأولى من هذا القرن إلى السنة الخمسين منه. ومن مزاياه في الفهرس أن يذكر بعد اسم المترجم وسنة الوفاة - ميزته عن غيره - فيقول: فقيه. مرشد. معتقد. عالم. عالم كبير. والي. طبيب. قاضي الشام. مفتي الشام. شيخ قراء. محدث كبير. شيخ الشام. فقيه الشام. محدث. نقيب. فاتح. مفتي. أمين فتوى. إمام. خطيب. مرشد كبير. مؤرخ. فلكي. عالم شاعر. أديب شاعر. نقشبندي. مولوي. صوفي. مجذوب. خطاط. رئيس مؤذنيين...
