لما كان النسب هو الوشيجة التي تربط بين الفرد وذويه، والآصرة التي تشد الإنسان إلى أخيه-فيكون الارتباط بين أفراد الأمة قوياً-فقد افرد له "ابن قدامه المقدسي" كتابين أحدهما "الاستبصار في نسب الأنصار" وثانيهما هذا الكتاب الذي نقلب صفحاته وهو "التبيين في إنسان القرشيين" ومنه يسرد نسب القرشيين على درجة قرباهم من رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، فترجم لهم لأنهم أهل النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، وعشيرته وذوو قرباه.
بدأ المؤلف مصنفه بسرد نسب رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، مترجماً له ترجمة مختصرة مركزة اعتمدت على الحساب الزمني بالسنين لبعثته عليه الصلاة والسلام، ثم ذكر أزواجه فأولاده والأقرب إليه من عشيرته، ثم الأقرب إليهم إليه، وهو منهج أرتاه المؤلف صحيحاً فسار عليه، ولذلك قيل أن منهجية "أقدامه المقدسي" وتجلي عمل المحقق بـ أولاً: تدوين ترجمة صغيرة للأعلام التي وردت في المتن من غير القرشيين، ثانياً: تخريج الأشعار التي وردت في الكتاب، تصحيح بعض الأسماء واختلاق الروايات مثبتاً ذلك في الهوامش.
