معاناته الحقيقية في سجن (بوكا) كانت بكل المعايير، أقسى من الكلمات التي سطرها بعناء عن تجربته المريرة التي اختطفت من عمره أكثر من ثلاث سنوات، وكان حينها في أوج اندفاعه لرسم خواتم مجده الأدبي. عقب الخروج من السجن لم يكن بكامل قواه الجسدية، ألم به المرض، وتمكن منه الإحباط، وإن اجتهد أمام أصدقائه وذويه لبيدو بكامل عزيمته على ممارسة الحياة بما تبقى لديه من مرح وإصرار.
متقشف غي احتياجاته، طموح فيما ينشده، سعى "محسن الخفاجي" إلى أن يقول كلمته عن تجربة استثنائية تفرد بها، كأديب عراقي يتعرض للاعتقال من قبل القوات الأمريكية عشية الحرب على العراق. إحساسه دائم بالخطر الوشيك، نفسياً وموضوعياً قاده إلى كتابة "حمامة القنصل"، مجموعة قصصية عوالمها وقائع الحياة في السحن الأمريكي، كان يأمل أن تكون شهادة حية عن تجربة لم يعشها سواه من الأدباء والكتاب العراقيين. ربما دوّن بعضها على عجالة وفي ظل ظروف قسرية، لم تكن مأمولة لكاتب شغوف بأناقة ما يكتب، كان هاجسه، والحال كذلك، صادقاً إلى حدّ كبير، في أن الوقت سوف لن يمنحه فسحة كافية لرونقة حكاياته كما ينبغي، لكنه بكل الأحوال أوفى بحقها كشهادة عن زمن عراقي مضطرب، متسارع في أحداثه، أقل ما يمكن أن يقال بحقه، أنه عصيب وعصي على الفهم.
دافعنا لإظهار (حمامة القنصل) إلى النور، بعد رحيل كاتبها، وجعلها متاحة بين أيدي القراء الأعزاء، تلويحة وفاء لذكى كاتب دؤوب، آمن – حتى اللحظة الأخيرة من حياته – بقدرة الحلم على تغيير العالم.
