أجمعت المواثيق الدولية وإتفاقيات اليونسكو وإعلانات حقوق الطفولة على أن التعليم باللغة الأم حق طبيعي للطفل لا يجوز إنتقاصه، وقد حددت اليونسكو يوم 21 شباط / فبراير من كل عام اليوم الدولي للغة الأم، وقد أشار كثير من الدراسات الميدانية إلى أن الأطفال يتعلمون بشكل أفضل عندما يكون التعليم باللغة الأم.
ومن المعروف لدى الخبراء أن اللغة الأم هي المكون الرئيس للهوية الثقافة للأفراد والمجتمعات، وإن الأمة التي تخسر لغتها تخسر هويتها وثقافتها، وقد تصدى هذا الكتاب لمناقشة قضية الإهمال المتعمد للغة العربية في ضوء إعتماد التعليم باللغة الأجنبية لبعض مواد المنهج مثل العلوم والرياضيات، وآثاره السيئة على الأجيال الصاعدة.
وقد اعتمد الكتاب على مناقشة القضية مناقشة علمية موضوعية مجردة في ضوء نتائج الأبحاث والدراسات الميدانية الدولية وآراء الخبراء والمختصين، وقد بينت الدراسات أهمية التعليم باللغة الأم وبخاصة في مرحلة الروضة والمرحلة الإبتدائية، وأن تقوية باللغة الأم يساعد على التعلم في سائر مواد المنهج الدراسية، كما يساعد على تعلم اللغة الأجنبية.
وقد بينت الدراسات الميدانية أن الفترة المناسبة لإكتساب اللغة الأجنبية هي الفترة المناسبة لإكتساب اللغة الأجنبية هي الفترة التي تبدأ من سن الحادية عشر أو الثانية عشر أي بعد سن البلوغ، حيث أشارت نتائج التجارب العملية إلى أن البالغين أقدر على فهم اللغة الأجنبية وإكتسابها من الأطفال.
