وفي هذه الرواية يصور بول وضع الناس الخارجين من الحرب العالمية الثانية، والذين يجدون أنفسهم فجأة بلا سند في عالم مخرب مادياً وروحياً.
ما يميز كتابه هانير شربول أن القارئ لرواياته يتلمس عمق الجرح الذي تعانيه كل شخصية من شخصيات الرواية، وهي تتحدث لا عن نفسها فحسب وإنما عن الآخرين، ولا سيما أنه بيل قد نجح في استدراج شخصياته إلى البوح، حتى اننا نظل نتذكر "بوكنر" و"كيت" و"سيرج" وفتاة المطعم الصغيرة والابله في هذه الرواية، وهم عينة من الناس البسطاء الذي يشكلون غالبية ضحايا الحرب. وهذا ليس غريباً فقد تحدث هاينرش بول في كل رواياته عن الناس وخاصة في ألمانيا بعد الحرب. إنهم يواجهون النتائج الصعبة مثلما يجهدون للخلاص من أسباب نتائج اخرى تستجد، لقد كانوا يعانون من "السباحة في ماء رمادي..." كل هذا وإنسانيتهم معهم، "يحبون ويشتاقون ويتمنون وإذ يضحكون فنادراً أو بخفوت، وابتسامتهم لا تكاد تظهر حتى تختفي، الهمَ في أرواحهم والوجوه..." هكذا يصفهم هاينرش بول وهو يحول الواقع إلى حكايات تروى...
