"محنة أمير المؤمنين" كتيب تم استخراجه من كتاب المصنف "الاختصاص" وفيه يتحدث عليّ (رضي الله عنه) عن محنته وذلك من خلال إجابته عن أسئلة سألها رأس اليهود. والأسئلة هي: قال رأس اليهود "ما نجد في الكتاب أن الله عز وجل إذا بعث نبياً أوحى إليه أن يتخذ من أهل بيته من يقوم بأمر ربه في أمته من بعده وأن يعهد إليه فيهم عهداً يحتذيه ويعمل به في أمته من بعده، وأن الله عز وجل يمتحن الأوصياء في حياة الأنبياء ويمتحنهم بعد وفاتهم من مرة؟ وإلى ما يصير آخر أمر الأوصياء إذا رضى الله محنتهم؟.
والمصنف هو أبو عبد الله محمد بن محمد بن النعمان العكبري البغدادي الملقب بالمفيد ينتهي نسبه إلى يعرب بن قحطان. كان من اجلاء مشايخ الشيعة ورئيسهم، انتهت إليه رئاسة الطائفة في وقته، وكان يلقب بالمفيد له كتب عديدة في الفقه والحديث منها المقنعة، الأمالي، الاختصاص وهو المؤلف الذي استخرج من هذا الكتيب.
