لقد خضعت الظاهرة القومية في العالم العربي لتحليلات عدة. مع ذلك تظل النزعة القومية مثار تساؤل يطرح كل يوم بعداً جديداً. وها هو عالم اليوم، بعد التفكك القومي للاتحاد السوفياتي السابق وبعض بلدان أوروبا الوسطى، يزيد في إلحاح الأسئلة.
ولعل حالنا في العالم العربي أسوأ. فما من فترة من تاريخنا المعاصر تنبئ بانهيار مشاريع الوحدة العربية كهذه الفترة.
أبعد من ذلك, نشهد على النطاق العربي تشققاً داخلياً على أساس إثني وديني وطائفي، كما لو أن الروابط ما قبل الحديثة شرعت تجدّد شبابها في زمن يوصف بـ"القرية الكونية الواحدة"!.
هذه المواضيع تعالجها المساهمات الكثيرة التي ضمّها الكتاب، وقد وضعها عدد من الباحثين الغربيين والكتاب العرب.
وهي تنقسم إلى 4 مجموعات بحسب المواضيع: المجموعة (1) هي قراءات نظرية في القومية، اخترناها من أهم منظرين حديثين في القومية هما: بندكت اندرسون، المجموعة (2) تضم ثلاث مساهمات تتحدث عن آفاق النزعة القومية (Nationalism) والدول القومية (Nation - States)، متوقعة تضاؤل أهميتها على الصعيد العالمي دون أن يُفضي ذلك إلى زوالها، من ناحية، وتحول مضامينها وأشكالها، على الأقل فيما يتعلق بالمنطقة العربية؛ يغطي الجوانب العالمية أريك هوبزباوم وإيرنست جيلنر، فيما يغطي الآفاق العربية ايبرهارد كينله.
كذلك المجموعة (3) من المقالتا تتناول علاقة القومية العربية بالدين، وتضم دراستين، الأولى للبروفسور سامي ربيدة، والثانية للكاتب "فالح عبد الجبار"، وهي محاولة لتقديم مسح تاريخي وتصنيفات (تنميطات) لأشكال تزاوج القومية بالدين والقومية بالميول السياسية في الفكر النظري الإسلامي والعروبي منذ أواخر القرن التاسع عشر حتى ثمانينات هذا القرن.
أما مجموعة (4) والأخيرة فتتألف من خمسة مقالات وأبحاث عن علاقة القومية العربية بالمجتمع والأيديولوجيا، مع نماذج تطبيقية مستقاة من المشرق العربي تحديداً.
