وقف الأصحاب مع ثروة الإمام أحمد بن حنبل الضخمة في الفقه وأصوله، والعلوم الشرعية الأخرى، مفسرين لمصطلحاته وموضحين لرموزه، وذلك لأن الإمام لم يدوّن فقهه في كتب كما فعل غيره، ولم يبين مراده في مصطلحاته بياناً مسطراً، لذا فقد عمد الأصحاب إلى تجلية معاني ما جاء عنه من مصطلحات، وتحرير المراد منها.
هذا ويلزم كل ناظر في الفقه أو الأصول لمذهب معين أن يعرف معاني مصطلحات ذلك المذهب حتى لا يحملها على غير المراد منها، فينسب غليه ما ليس فيه، أو ينفي عنه ما هو جزء منه وذلك كله لما يمثله الفقه وأصوله في شؤون المسلمين، فإن علم أصول الفقه هو من أجلّ العلوم، لأنه مرتبط بكلام الله الحي القيوم وسنة النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم. وقواعد الاستنباط فيه مهمة لكل طالب له، لأنه تبين كيفية استثمار الحكم من ألفاظ نصوص الكتاب والسنة، من أجل ذلك تقدم الباحث عبد المحسن بن عبد العزيز الصويغ بموضوعه هذا "قواعد الاستنباط من ألفاظ الأدلة عند الحنابلة وآثارها الفقهية" لنيل درجة الدكتوراه في أصول الفقه، وهو موضوع لم يخدم من قبل في رسالة مستقلة كما خدمت حجية الأدلة. وقد رسم الباحث خطة بحثه على مقدمة وتمهيد وستة أبواب وخاتمة.
وسار في بحثه على النهج التالي: 1-تحرير رأي الإمام أحمد فيما تعددت الروايات عنه فيه، 2-تحرير الخلاف بين الإمام وبين من خالفه من الأصحاب، 3-تحرير الخلاف بين الأصحاب فيما لم يكن للإمام فيه رأي، 4-نسبة الأقوال إلى أصحابها وتحقيق ذلك، 5-ذكر الأدلة والاعتراضات عليها، والردود، ثم الترجيح، 6-بناء الفروع على القواعد: فبعد كل قاعدة يتم ذكر ما يتفرع عليها، 7-تخريج الأحاديث وتوثيق الأقوال من مراجعها، 8-ترتيب الفهارس على حسب ترتيب الأبواب.
