عن أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام "الزهد ثروة"، وعنه أيضاً عليه السلام "الزهد متجر رابح" وعنه أيضاً عليه السلام، "لن يفتقر من زهد" قال الحواريون لعيسى عليه السلام: مالك تمشي على الماء ونحت لا نقدر على ذلك؟ فقال لهم: "وما منزلة الدنيا والدرهم عندكم"؟ فقالوا: حسن: قال "لكنها عندي والمدر سواه".
الزاهد هو الذي يؤثر طاعة ربه على طاعة نفسه، وهذا ما تبينه الكثير من الروايات، وقد يتطلب الزهد امتلاك الكثير من النعم في الحياة الدنيا، لكن بالمقابل على الإنسان أن يبرهن بأن هذه النعم وعدمها سواء عنده، وأن لا تشغله النعم والأرزاق عن الطاعات العظيمة، والزهد لا يتعارض مع الغنى الذي يقوى على التقوى. فالغنى إن كان من حيث الدلالة على المال فبإمكان الإنسان التصدق على الفقراء وإعانة المحتاجين وقضاء حوائج المؤمنين والسفر إلى الحج والزيارة وإشباع عياله وتعليمهم...
هذا هو عين الزهد لأنه يتفق مع الإيثار الذي أراده الله لعباده، وأزهد الزهاد في الدنيا هو رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، رغم كل ما عرض عليه من كنور الدنيا والآخرة أبى إلا أن يكون عبداً مطيعاً شاكراً لربه، فلقد هبط إلى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ملك لم يهبط إلى الأرض قبله وهو ميكائيل، فقال له "يا محمد عش ملكاً منعماً وهذه مفاتيح خزائن الأرض معك وتسير معك جبالها ذهباً وفضة ولا ينقص لك مما ادخر لك في الآخرة شيء" فقال له صلى الله عليه وسلم: "بل أعيش نبياً عبداً آكل يوماً ولا آكل يومين وألحق بإخواني من الأنبياء" فزاده الله تبارك وتعالى الكوثر وأعطاه الشفاعة، وذلك أعظم من ملك الدنيا من أولها إلا آخرها سبعين مرة, ووعده المقام المحمود فإذا كان يوم القيامة أقعده الله عز وجل على العرش". في هذا الكتاب باقة من قصص علمائنا الأطهار في الزهد.
