في عصرنا الحاضر أصبح مجال الكيمياء الحيوية أكثر تطوراً بحيث أصبح يخدم الطلبة المهنيين ليس فقط في المجال نفسه بل في مجالات أخرى كثيرة كعلوم المهن الطبية والبيولوجية على اختلاف تفرعاتها، وفي هذا الاطار لا بد من التنويه إلى ضرورة التركيز على الكتب العلمية الجيدة التي نرجع إليها في اللغة العربية لغة التعليم العالي في بعض التخصصات جنباً إلى جنب مع اللغة الانجليزية، ولتحقيق هذا الغرض صدرت الطبعة الثانية من هذا الكتاب بعد تنقيحها وإجراء التعديلات عليها، وتناولت كما في الطبعة الأولى أهمية الكربوهيدرات وتعريفها وما يتعلق بها، و"التماكب" والفعالية الضوئية وتعريفها، كما يتطرق الكتاب إلى البناء الكيميائي لسكر الجلوكوز وتأكسد السكريات الأحادية وذلك كله وغيره من المواضيع ضمن الوحدة الأولى، وفي الوحدة الثانية عرف الكتاب "اللوبيدات" والأحماض الدهنية وتصنيفها الذي انقسم إلى مشبعة وغير مشبعة، وتناول الكتاب كذلك البروتينات والاحماض النووية.
