تتجه هذه الدراسة إلى رصد تطور الدلالات اللغوية في أعمال محمود درويش الشعرية وهي: "عصافير بلا أجنحة"، و"أوراق الزيتون"، و"عاشق من فلسطين وآخر الليل"، و"العصافير لا تموت"، و"حبيبتي تنهض من نومها"، وأحبك أو لا أحبك، ومحاولة رقم 7، وتلك صورتها وهذا انتحار العاشق" و"أعراس"، و"مديح الظل العالي" و"حصار لمدائح البحر"، وهي "اغنية هي أغنية" و"ورد أقل"، و"ارى ما أريد"، و"أحد عشر كوكباً". أما منهجية الدراسة فإنها تقوم على القراءة النصية لإنتاج الشاعر في مراحله الشعرية المختلفة، حيث عمت إلى الوقوف على التطور الحاصل في الدلالة اللغوية لدى الشاعر على مدى إنتاجه الشعري، كما عمدت إلى محاولة حصر بعض الظواهر الدلالية وفق أطروحات علم الدلالة الحديث. لذلك فقد جاءت الدراسة في ثلاثة فصول، تناول الفصل الأول عدداً من القضايا الأساسية في التمهيد للجانب التطبيقي من الدراسة، وهي أولاً التعريف بعلم الدلالة والتطور الدلالي، وثانياً: وخصوصية لغة الشعر، وثالثاً: النقد الحديث وعلم الدلالة، ورابعاً: الدراسات النقدية وشعر محمد درويش، وخامساً: موقف الشاعر من تطوير دلالاته. أما الفصل الثاني فقد تناول نماذج تطبيقية لتطور الدلالات في لغة الشاعر. أما الفصل الثالث: فتناول تطور بعض ظواهر الأسلوب الشعري، وهي اللغة الشعبية وخصوصية لغة الشاعر، ومظاهره في أسلوب الشاعر وبعض إشارات وملامح لغة الشاعر.
