إن تأثير كتاب "طبائع" في العصر القديم كان قوياً جداً، ومَمِّا لا جدل فيه هو أهمية الترابط بين نتاج تيوفراست "371 ق.م" وتلامذته الكبار الذين استفادوا منه في ميدان علم النفس من خلال العرض العميق للطبائع الإنسانية؛ وكذلك في مجال الكوميديا عبر بلوتوس وتيرينز حتى الوقت الحاضر.
كما استفاد في الإتجاهات الفلسفية ستوا ونظرية أبيقور في مساعيهما لتفسير وحلّ قضايا الفرد من شعبية العرض الذي قام به تيوفراست؛ إن إضفاء الصبغة الأخلاقية على هذه الإتجاهات التي برزت في الأعمال الساخرة الرومانية خاصة عند لوسيليوس وهوراس وفي بعض أعمال سينيكا، إزدادت قوة في العصور القديمة اللاحقة والتي قادت إلى كتابة مقدمة وخاتمة تعليمية لبعض مقاطع "طبائع".
لاقى هذا الكتاب إهتماماً كبيراً كذلك في القرن السابع عشر والقرن الثامن عشر خاصة في دول غرب ووسط أوروبا، أما تأثيره الأدبيلم يتأخر فقد تطور وصف طبائع الشخصية في إنكلترا إلى نوع أدبي مستقل على يد أهم الكتّاب.
لم يلق كتاب "طبائع" في القرن التاسع عشر والقرن العشرين صدى يسمح بمقارنته بالصدى الذي لاقاه في العصور السابقة، بيد أن هذا العمل الصغير يبقى جزءاً ثميناً من التراث الثقافي القديم؛ إن المقولة التي حكم بها كاسوبونوس على كتاب تيوفراست كــ "كتيّب ذهبي" ستجد تأثيرها في المستقبل.
