لقد قام الحافظ ابن رجب الحنبلي في هذه الرسالة الصغيرة النافعة بشرح حديث رسول الله صلى الله: بعثت بالسيف بين يدي الساعة, بتوسع, فقد اعتمد في شرحه على نصوص استقاها من معين الكتاب والسنة وأقوال علماء السلف الصالح, فجاءت مستوفية للغرض الذي دونت من أجله, يستفيد منها العام والخاص من القراء. وقام المحدث عبد القادر الأرناؤوط بتحقيقها تحقيقاً متقناً نافعاً, وتخريج أحاديثها تخريجاً واسعاً, فاستكملت الرسالة بذلك شروط النشرة العلمية المتقنة. والهدف من هذه الرسالة بيان أن الدعوة الى الله تكون أولاً بالحجة والبيان والحكمة والموعظة الحسنة والجدال بالتي هي أحسن, فمن لم يستجب إلى توحيد الله تعالى بالقرآن والحجة والبيان دعي بالسيف. وذكر أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم هكذا كانت دعوته بعدما هاجر وصار له دار وأتباع وقوة ومنعة.
