كثرت التصانيف قديماً وحديثاً حول العلوم القرآنية وتنوعت بتنوع الموضوعات، فمنها ما اهتم بالتفسير، ومنها ما اهتم بالإعراب ومنها ما تناول الناسخ والمنسوخ، ومنها ما تحدث عن الوقف والابتداء، ومنها ما بحث وجوه الإعجاز، ومنها ما شرح اللفظ الغريب... والكتاب الذي بين أيدينا، هو أحد مصنفات علم الغريب الكثيرة، إذ حظي هذا العلم بكثير من الاهتمام، وهذه المصنفات منها ما درس وحقق ونشر، ومنها ما زال محفوظاً في مكتبات عربية وأجنبية، وبحاجة إلى من ينفض عنه غبار السنين.
وتكمن قيمة هذا الكتاب في كونه نهج منهجاً وسطاً بين أمثاله، فالشرح فيه ليس بالكثير الممل ولا بالقليل المخل، أضف إلى ذلك أن مؤلفه هو الإمام عبد الله بن يحيى اليزيدي، أحد الأعلام الكبار، وأحد تلاميذ أئمة اللغة والنحو والقرآن، أبي عمرو بن العلاء ويحيى اليزيدي والفراء. وتزداد قيمة هذا الكتاب وأهميته إذا ما علمنا أنه ألّف قبل كثير من الكتب المشهورة التي ألّفت في هذا الموضوع ككتاب ابن قتيبة، وكتاب المفردات للراغب الأصفهاني مثلاً. كما أن للكتاب قيمته التاريخية إذ أن مؤلفه توفي سنة 237هـ. ولأهمية هذا الكتاب ولمكانة مصنفه عني بتذييله بتحقيق لطيف هدفه توضيح ما أبهم فيه وما أشكل؛ كما وعني بتخريج الآيات الكريمة والأحاديث النبوية الشريفة الواردة داخل المتن. بالإضافة إلى ذلك دوّن مقدمة للتحقيق تحدث فيها على علم غريب القرآن، نسبة الكتاب، رواة الكتاب؛ المؤلف، قيمة الكتاب، مواصفات النسخة المخطوطة.
