ولدت حنان الشيخ في بيروت عام ،1945 منذ طفولتها كانت تشعر بتوق إلى الانعتاق من بيئتها المتشددة والمنغلقة. عملت في الصحافة وأصدرت أولى رواياتها انتحار رجل ميت . 1970 سنة 1968 تزوجت وانتقلت مع زوجها إلى الخليج العربي حيث كتبت فرس الشيطان ، 1975 ثم سافرت لتقيم في لندن إثر الحرب الأهلية في لبنان وكتبت عنها روايتها حكاية زهرة 1980 التي منعت في الدول العربية لأنها تعالج موضوع الجنس، ثم كتب Hanan Al Shaykh

حنان الشيخ كاتبة متحررة ترفض الواقع الذي تعيش فيه المرأة العربية وهي تكتب بلا رقابة وبجرأة متخطية الأعراف والتقاليد كاشفة التأخر والجهل السائدين في العالم العربي

مناخ هذه القصص القصيرة واحد، المرأة العربية، أينما كانت، كيفما كانت: في الجنوب تحلم ببيروت ولو كان حمام النسوان، في الربع الخالي تجد العقرب بعد جهدٍ ثم تستمع إلى عظامها وهي تطقطق محترقة، في جبال اليمن تسحر حبيب الليل إلى حمار، في القاهرة تتمنى لو يأخذها جون برونز بين ذراعيه، ترى حمامتها البيضاء الزاجل مذبوحة، في الواحة تغرز علم الزواج حيث لا خابة، في الغربة حيث الطبيعة الأوروبية والحنين إلى الوطن يحولان خيالها إلى واقع، صغيرة تصاب بخيبة أمل بجارها الذي يصفر، وباختفاء السجادة العجمية، مراهقة كلما فكرت بأهلها تذكرت رجال عائلتها وبكتن صبية تتمنى وتخطط لزوجها العجوز لسعة ثعبان مميتة، وامرأة تلهب خيال الرجل الذي يسكن بيتها أثناء الحرب اللبنانية، وأم تتمنى الشر للمعزيات، وامرأة كلؤلؤة الصحراوية اللابسة عباءة تقر عيناً أمام سارة الحضرية.
