(البيرق: قصص في مهب الريح) تغطي تاريخاً طويلاً يتحرك على مساحة جغرافية واسعة تتجاوز بلد الكاتب بسام المسلم، وتضيء مرحلة التحول من ثقافة البدور إلى ثقافة المدينة، خصوصاً أن بعض حكاياتها تتوغل في تفاصيل المجتمع البدوي وهو يعيش مرحلة عبد الكريم قاسم حاكم العراق آنذاك والذي كان يرى الكويت "قائماقية تابعة لمحافظة البصرة" لذلك فالقصص بعض وقائعها تسبق ميلاد الكاتب المسلم الذي يراه فهد الهندال (شمعة جديدة).
في المجموعة قصص من زمن ما قبل الدولة، أو من زمن بداياتها في الكويت، حيث كان للثأر موقعه في المجتمع، كذلك ثمة مساحة لقليل من قصص الحب وللأحلام وعروس البحر وشهريار، وانقلاب المفاهيم والتراتب الإجتماعي كما كتب في (تحت برج الحمام) : " ... عدنا إلى بيتنا العود لنخدم العياشين فيه. من هنا يمكنني رؤية ابناء عمومتي وهم يرعون أغنام العياشين ونوقهم خلف القصر. وإذا أطلقت ناظري أمامه، وجدت إخوتي يملأون البساتين، يتسلقون أعناق النخيل ليلقحونه. أما أنا فأقوم برعاية الحمائم تحت أبراجها التي شيّدها جدي الأكبر فوق القصر، وأسراب منها تدور حوله .. وقد نثرت شمس الأصيل أشعتها على وجهي وجدرانه".
هذه القصص يقولها سام المسلم بواسطة راوٍ مذكر، فيبدو الراوي وكأنه يتذكر مسيرته الماضية ويروي الحاضرة، وأحياناً يرتقي فعل التذكر ليغدو فعل معانية، وتكسر الصيغة جدار الزمن مستحضرة الماضي الذي خلفه. وتأتي اللغة التصويرية لتسم الخطاب بإيقاع درامي حيناً، ورومانسي حيناً أخرى غير أنه ينخرط في علاقة تكاملية مع مكونات كل قصة ويجعلها جديرة بالقراءة.
يضم الكتاب إحدى عشرة قصة قصيرة جاءت تحت العناوين الآتية: "ليلة مع عروس البحر" ، "الشفق الأحمر" ، "على عتبات الديوان" ، "ساعة الصفر" ، "الليلة يموت شهريار" ، "ترنيمة" ، "1920" ، "البيرق" ، "غسالة أدهم" ... وقصص أخرى.
"كانوا يأتون إلى البراحة وبأيديهم مشاعل الزيت. حتى إذا اكتملوا ساروا يشقّون ليل المدينة كالفراش المضيء.. ألحق بهم فيتبدّد في نفسي رعبٌ زرعته أحاديث النساء عن الدماء المسفوحة في الصحراء. بجانب البحر تحطّ الجموع رحالها. تنثر فوانيسها على الأرض وفوق أساس البناء. إليهم حملتُ الماء. ومعهم حملتُ الطين مرّات. عجباً بعد تلك السنين ما زلتُ أجد رائحة الطين في راحة يدي وتحت أظافري.."
