هذا كتاب نادر بين الكتب التراثية، وكان الباحثون يظنون أنه من الكتب المفقودة، ولكن المستشرق الألماني الكبير أوغست فيشر وجد نسخة فريدة في برلين، و أخذ عنها نسخة مصورة عام 1937، وأعطاها إلى العلاقة الأب انستاس ماري الكرملي، الذي أعطاها إلى الباحث المتميز كوركيس عواد لإعداده للنشر.
قيل شعر كثير في الأديرة التي كان يقصدها كبار الشعراء في العصرين الأموي والعباسي بحثاً عن ساعات الأنس والطرب والغزل والشرب، ومنهم أبو نؤاس، الذي اعتاد بعض المحققين حذف الكثير من أجمل شعره، أما الباحث كوركيس عواد فلم يحذف شيئاً من هذا الكتاب.
