مصنف هذا الكتاب هو الإمام العالم المتقن الحافظ "أبو حاتم محمد بن حبان التميمي البُستي السجستاني" وهو من قبيلة تميم. وقد أنفق المؤرخون على أنه ولد ستة بضع وسبعين ومائتين. منذ صغره كان مهتماً بالعلم، وهذا ما دفعه إلى الطواف في العالم الإسلامي طلباً للعلم، والسماع من الشيوخ الذي يقال أن عددهم ألفي شيخ. كان ابن حبان متقناً متفنناً من العلوم وتصنيفها، ذو حظ كبير من النظر والتدقيق والاستقصاء والاستنباط، مع بذلٍ كبير للمجهود، حتى كانت الرحلة لمصنفاته وسماع كتبه من أهل عصره. والذي لا شك فيه أن أهم ما قام به الشيخ في حياته هو ما أودع من التصانيف النادرة التي لم يسبق لأكثرها. وابن حبان لم يكتف بتأليفها بل اهتم كذلك بنشرها. ومن هذه التصانيف كان هذا الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا والذي أفرده لتدوين سيرة حياة سيد الأنبياء محمد عليه الصلاة والسلام، وبالتالي فقد ضمنه معالجة لجميع الموضوعات التي تتعلق بسيرة هذا النبي الكريم بدءاً بمولده ونسبه، وخروجه للشام، ومروراً بنزول الوحي عليه، ونشره للدين الإسلامي وغزواته، وانتهاء بوفاته عليه الصلاة والسلام وصفاته. ولأهمية الكتاب وللمكانة التي كان يتمتع بها مصنفه فقد عني بإخراج هذه الطبعة التي بين أيدينا محققة وموثقة، ومعلق عليها، ليسهل على القارئ الوقوف على مضمونها العام.
